Now, for the long version...

Too many times I find myself scouring the internet for reputation exchange breakdowns of items I want to cash-in to factions in Destiny. I finally got tired of doing that and to make it easier, I have collected all the calculations and abridged them into one article.

Let's start first with the easiest items you can get your hands on, Ammo Synthesis. You normally collect them on your journey as random rewards from bounties but you can also get them from the raid chest. Wait, what did you just say? You don't raid?! Well, I have good news for you! Remember one of the early quests you have on your journey to becoming a legend? You were asked to pick-up a weapon from good old gunsmith. Surprise surprise! He also sells Synthesis!

My motivation really: I finally got tired of doing that every time!

Banshee-44 | Gunsmith

Mister Banshee-44 here sells Special Ammo Synthesis for 250 glimmer a pop and Heavies for 950 glimmer a piece. Now I know what you are thinking right now, that's too damn expensive! Well, here's more good news for you!

As an alternative, you can buy the exact same synths for only 100 glimmer (special) and 250 glimmer (heavy) from Variks! There's a catch though, you'll need to trade-in one (1) Ether Seeds each piece. If the problem you currently have lies with the glimmer shortage, then there's another alternative. Eris Morn trades synths in exchange of Black Wax Idol, 2 idols for special and 5 idols for heavies. If you've been playing this game for a while, you should have tons of those to trade-in anyway!

By exchanging Special Ammo Synthesis to the respective factions (Dead Orbit / New Monarchy / Future War Cult), you'll get 25 faction reputation per 4 pieces. On the other hand, you'll get 25 faction reputation per 1 Heavy Ammo Synthesis. If you have an exotic class gear equipped, you'll get 27 faction reputation instead. As a bonus; if you have amassed a truck-load of Strange Coins, you can buy Heavy synths from Xûr!

Motes of Light, Armor Materials and Weapon Parts

This thing called Mote of Light

The good thing about Materials in Destiny, you're highly likely collect a lot of these by playing the game as normal. You get Mote of Light from chests, bounties, rare and legendary engrams, Public Event, Vanguard Strikes, Crucible Matches and of course by trading Year one materials (Ascendant and Radiant Shards).

You'd highly likely collect a lot of these by playing the game as normal.

Armor Materials and Weapon Parts are acquired from dismantling rare and legendary armor or weapons. The amount of materials or parts you'd get depends on how much you level up your gear before dismantling them. As you go about your game to game activities in Destiny, engrams will drop from any enemy type you kill in the game.

Trading Mote of Light to factions will give you 100 faction reputation per 5 motes. If you have an exotic class gear equipped, you'll get 110 faction reputation instead. You'll be getting 50 faction reputation per 25 Armor Materials and 50 faction reputation per 25 Weapon Parts. If you have an exotic class gear equipped, you'll get 55 faction reputation instead. As a bonus; if you have spare Strange Coins, you can also buy Motes from Xûr!

Planetary Materials

Planetary Materials are easily obtained from nodes and chests whenever you do patrol missions. They are fairly easy to obtain and on top of that, you also get a daily Vanguard bounty that rewards you for doing patrol missions on random planets! If you don't do much patrol these days but still do a lot of end-game activities like raids and crucible, then you're probably loaded with Legendary Marks from dismantling Legendary gears. You can exchange those marks with Vanguard Quartermaster Roni 55-30 for some

Roni 55-30 | Vanguard Quartermaster

I don't know if anybody cares about Crota's Bane, but if you have spare Flakes and Wormspore then you can exchange these materials with Eris Morn. I mean, honestly I would prefer to exchange Wormspore for the other "better" factions.

Trading Planetary Materials to factions will give you 50 faction reputation per 25 mats. If you have an exotic class gear equipped, you'll get 55 faction reputation instead. Eris Morn takes 15 Hadium Flakes for 50 reputation and 25 Wormspore for 50 reputation.

Final Thoughts

There are many avenues for you to build-up reputation from each faction and in most cases, the items you need to gain more are rewards you get from playing the game as normal. Of course, there are certain ways for you to grind more specific materials and consumables to get exactly what you want or need.

Reputation edging much?

My suggestion, when you are about to edge your glimmer to the max cap limit either spend those spare glimmer on Heavy Synths or Weapon Parts. Mind, Weapon Parts stacks more pieces per inventory slot compared to Heavy synths. Alternatively, if you have a lot of Legendary Marks to spare, then exchange those marks for Planetary Materials. Lastly, don't forget to equip your exotic class item gear (if you have one) before turning in your donations.
